About the Author

Barring time, space, and sexual orientation, I could have been the love child of Erma Bombeck and David Sedaris.  My parents, ever the picture of creativity and compromise, would have built our house halfway between her home in Dayton, Ohio and his in Paris, France… putting us somewhere out in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.  Our happy (and hopefully seaworthy) home would have been filled with endlessly entertaining banter, where sarcasm and self-deprecating humor were doled out in equal measure.  And every night, after a good-natured fight over which one of them got to read me excerpts from their novels as a bedtime story, I would be lulled to sleep by the frantic sound of typing fingers.  There would have been no obstacle the Bombeck (hyphen) Sedaris family couldn’t overcome together… except perhaps how they were going to row me to and from school everyday.

I began this blog in the hopes that it would stimulate what little grey matter I have left – use it or lose it, they say.  Well, after over a decade of being a stay-at-home mom, I was definitely losing it!  Had I waited much longer to fire up those dormant cerebral synapses in my head, I’m pretty sure my brain would have started to ooze out my ears like warm oatmeal.

My main goal in life is to prevent my two children from growing up to be serial killers…. though on most days, my children test my resolve not to become one myself.  My interests and hobbies include (but aren’t limited to) taking afternoon naps, watching enviously while my cats take afternoon naps, and praying that my kids will one day want to take an afternoon nap.  I would tell you where I currently reside, but my paranoid fears warn me against it.  While I may be (fairly) certain my kids aren’t serial killers, I can’t say the same about you.  And the last thing I need to worry about is a homicidal maniac dropping by my house for a surprise visit – having a total stranger find out what a crappy housekeeper I am would be a total nightmare.

  1. You are READY…you SET yourself up well…and this is a great first GO?
I’ll look forward to your future musings, particularly if I need to lift up my spirits. Love ya!

    • Thanks, Aunt Marianne! Glad you liked it. Feedback like yours is the reason I sit down to write everyday – don’t want any spirits dragging around on the ground. I’ll do my best to keep them as high as I can 🙂 XOXO

    • jrbustamante – Thanks for commenting! It’s funny, when I posted this “About” page two months ago, I wasn’t crazy about it. I didn’t feel like there was any flow to it; it was too choppy for my tastes. But since I couldn’t figure out a way to make one paragraph flow into the next, I just left it as is. I reasoned that it was better than nothing. Guess I was right 🙂

    • Sapna – Thanks for responding to another one of my entries – you’re becoming quite the regular around here 🙂

I didn’t purposefully only use one category when I signed up – I just had NO idea what else to do. I’m about as techno-savvy as a two-year old. But I figured that most of my stuff would fall into the humor category (at least, I hoped so). Maybe one day I’ll branch out into other categories…. assuming I can figure out HOW.

    • Worldly – You’re quite welcome – thanks for your response. Glad I gave you a reason to giggle 🙂

Hope you stop by again soon!

P.S. – Thanks for giving me a reason to look forward to my senile years! 😉

  2. Nice to find your blog this morning. The bio is funny and your writing is good. You should be proud to attach a name and face to it. Hopefully one day you’ll work through your fears. The blogosphere isn’t so scary once you get used to it! See there’s my name. (Please don’t come over to discover the space age polymer the left over cheerios are creating in the kitchen sink.)

    • Sheila – Thanks for dropping by and leaving such a sweet comment. I’ve been on here for about four months now, and I can feel my guard dropping a bit. I’m not quite as paranoid about serial killers and stalkers as I was when I got this blog up off the ground. 🙂

    • Rebecca – Thanks! I like the new header too. My friend, Jeff, did an awesome job… I knew I kept him around for the past twenty years for a reason 😉

I appreciate the nomination for the “One Lovely Blog” award! It means a lot to me that my readers are enjoying themselves when they visit Get Write Down To It. With all the blogs out there in the cyberspace, it’s hard to know if I’m reaching people and making a difference. But when I get an award like the one you sent me, it makes me feel like I am. Thanks so much for the writer’s high! You’ve made my day!!

If I can figure out how to post the award to my blog, I will…. assuming I can find a way around my techno-tardiness 🙂

      • Glad I could pass on the writer’s high – I felt the same way when I received it! Don’t stress about posting it – either way, it’s just a way to say thanks for being a welcome part of my reading day!

  3. Love your about page, made me laugh (‘@watching my cat take naps’. Ironic, as I was just watching my dog take a nap ;), glad i stumbled upon it.

  4. I have been a stay at home dad since just before our #2 was born (1994) At one point I wanted to be a male version of Erma Bombeck but the demands of a toddler and a fussy baby bled that hope dry. Were it war, the UN would consider the life of an at home parent torture: sleep deprivation, constant harassment and isolation. I have managed to get them to young adulthood without killing anyone (nevermind that they often needed killing). In fact they are still comfortable in my presence. I too am trying to re awaken parts of my brain that died from neglect. God luck to us!

  5. Nice, very nice. Funny, very funny. My god that sounds kinda like a psycho, doesn’t it? Nope, I’m just a mom and a woman with some unnecessary body parts trying to write my way out of the paper bag that the happy meal came in. My kids are grown, I believe housework makes you ugly. (not you, the general all encompassing “you” “us,” actually “them,” those other poor ugly ones. : )
My husband & I are provisional empty nesters. Meaning our son comes home occasionally for provisions. I like your blog. I recognize the theme. Nice, very nice. : )

  6. I’ve just found this blog, and oh my: funny! I’m a SAHM to three, the oldest is 7 1/2, middle child is almost 5, and the youngest is 4 (and just toilet-trained! ya-HOO!). I’m busy, but I crave knowing that I’m not the only one out here that finds a rather skewed perspective to the whole child-rearing thing. Looking forward to more!

  7. Ive literally just started blogging and am still in fumbling around in the dark trying to find the lightswitch mode…yours is the firs tblog Ive stumbled on that made me laugh and aspire to create more posts and build up followers…thank you! 🙂

  8. Greetings,

Here’s what happens if you chose to accept:
    1. Write a post to accept the award and link back to me.
    2. Nominate some other blogs (as many or few as you want).
    3. Answer the silly questions or make up your own (just be aware that the blogs you nominate will need to answer the same questions).

  12. Linda,
I’m officially shaking your hand, and it’s here on your baby-girl-onesie-pink blog that I am extended my hand to you. Your Freshly Pressed badge and compelling content would look so much better on anything but pastel colours.
Glad you came my way. I’m here to stay, even if I need to squint when I’m taking an afternoon nap on your blog.
    Your new BFF4EVS™,
    Le Clown

    • Le Clown –

Okay, if we’re going to be BFF4EVS, first we need to get something straight….

While you’re over here in my pastel world, you will soak in the adorably sweet aesthetic of my blog and like it. I realize that it might take you a few moments to adjust your eyes after crawling out from the dark recesses of a Clown on Fire, but if I can handle the nightmares I got from visiting your site, I’m sure you can handle some mild corneal damage.

      • Linda,
We are going to be BFF4EVS™ as you sure know how to talk to a clown. As for soaking in your pastel colours, well….. no. Can we have coffee now? Let’s go to the closest shop, in neutral zone. I’m due for 4 more at least. We can have brunch, while we’re there.
        Le Clown

        • Le Clown –

This admission will probably only intensify the cotton candy image you have of me in that twisted little clown head of yours, but I don’t drink coffee. Never have. I tried to get hooked on it when I was 20, but it never took. However, on most days, I do have a seemingly bottomless mug of tea in my hand. So if you will promise not to look at me like a sideshow freak for not drinking coffee, I will gladly meet you for a nice, civilized cup of tea.

But I won’t eat crumpets… those things are fucking gross.

  14. Hi Linda,
I made my way over to your blog from Le Clown. Need I say more? I, too, have been a stay-at-home mom for 10 years!! Where does the time go? I understand completely, trust me I do. Congrats on what looks to be an outstanding blog, indeed. I look forward to it. Please call me Amy.

    • Hi Amy –

Thanks! It’s nice to meet a fellow SAHM – the women who battle the bon-bon eating, soap opera watching stereotypes, and understand the true torture of going to bed with the sounds of Spongebob Squarepants echoing in your brain.

Glad Le Clown directed you my way 🙂

      Linda

  16. Interesting enough I did not see your post pingback on Le Clown’s site but you were referred to me by Val, who was responding to my desperate plea for more followers. She linked your post about Spam Followers. It did not let her compliment down, she said you were funny, and Canadian to boot! I am sold, I am now a follower and you can believe me when I say I am breathing and my skin is warm and I have a beating heart!!! If you are so inclined, I would love it if you would visit my blog, perhaps leave a message and then hit the follow button. My last post is not my typical, so, please check out some of the others. Okay?
    Cathy the Bagg Lady

    • Cathy –

Val is sweet for sending you my way. However, I’m afraid that you’ve been misinformed – while I may be hysterically funny, I am not now, nor have I ever been Canadian…. I don’t even play one on TV. But I hope that we can still be friends. We already have so much in common – I breathe and have a heartbeat too! What are the chances?

I’ll be sure to visit you in your neck of the woods. Welcome aboard!

      Linda

      • Guaranteed you will keep me in stitches! I guess its okay that you are not a Canadian..sigh 🙂 You are correct in your assumption that I, too, have a heartbeat and breathe. Although, there are times that I hold my breath–when my 19 month old grandson does something very daring. He is quite the daredevil! Thank you for answering my comment. I look forward to seeing you again, either on yours blog or mine!
        Cathy

  17. I just discovered you through your thoughtful comment on another blog where you begin, “…if I was on a debate team, I wouldn’t have any problem finding an argument for either side of this story.” I want to tell you that I agree with every word you wrote in your comment, and I’m glad your comment was published.

    • Geisha –

Wow, this is the very first “I agree with you” comment I’ve gotten since the shit hit the fan. I’m a little stunned, but very pleasantly surprised. Thank you! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time out to let me know.

I’m glad the comment was published also – I thought the other side of the story needed a voice.

      Take care,
      Linda

P.S. – thanks for the follow!

      • I left a comment there as well (it mentioned you), and it was published, along with a thoughtful and polite response. I think now that I’ve said what I felt I needed to, I’m going to try to be done discussing the subject any further…
